"This peaceful reserve features native plantings and is home to a variety of birds, making it a pleasant spot for walking or cycling.

Tauranga City Council intends to develop Gordon Carmichael Reserve into one of Taurangas’ premier wetlands providing environmental, recreational and educational benefits to the community. As part of this vision, a central hub area is to be established on high ground, adjacent to the intersection of Carmichael Road and Westmorland Rise. The hub comprises of a car park, children’s playground, toilet, outdoor class room and information/ interpretation signage, including a short walkway around the immediate wetland pond. A large area of open space will be maintained immediately adjacent to the hub area.

The landscape design for the central hub includes the following:
A welcoming gateway area with information signage including directions to various features of the wetland and development. The gateway will include a nearby viewing platform protruding out into to the pond.

A wetland themed playground integrated into grass mounding will be developed in three stages. The various stages of the playground will be interconnected by a series of feature bridges. Play features, such as slides will be built in the mounding, providing a distinctive playground experience.
A carkpark integrated in the landscape with wetland planting and specimen trees.

A small toilet located close to the carpark and information area, will be nestled into surrounding planting and earth mounding. The buildings exterior finish will be low in re re re re reflectivity enabling it it to blend into the backdrop of planting.

An outdoor classroom comprising a circular space defined by grass mounding and concrete edge terracing providing space for large groups of school children to gather for wetland education.

Additional walkways providing a connection onto existing walkways including boardwalks within the wider wetland environment. This will include a short walkway around the immediate wetland pond, which will include interpretation signage along the ponds margin.

Additional wetland planting will be undertaken to integrate the above facilities into the wetland environment.
