The interiors are a combination of organic materials and a modern interpretation of traditional design,' Jonathan says.

The home has a warmth and a presence that is captured in its details. The layering of timber finishing is complemented by restful, natural colours and organic fibres.

A window seat wrapped in American oak and softened by natural fibre squabs helps to extend the kitchen and removes the need for a family room by providing a place to read, relax, and socialise.

Jonathan has used two different carpets to create zones and variance in the palate - a hard-wearing, textured man-made sisal has been laid in the lounge and a plush loop piled wool gives bedrooms softness and warmth.

Judges described the home as 'tactile' and noted the subtly lit cedar spine as ‘the main ordering device in a simple linear plan which is offset by neutral tones throughout the remainder of the house'.

Pitched feature ceilings in the kitchen and dining areas create a sense of volume and light and the multi-functional spaces feel intimate as well as open.

Back to Basics


Nestled on a steep Bay of plenty coastline this kiwi Bach blends seamlessly into the relaxed unpretentious surroundings.


A simple cedar clad form consisting of 2 bedrooms and large open plan living. Huge stacker sliding doors allow the interior living spaces to sprawl out onto the extensive sun-drenched deck overlooking the water’s edge.


Using the existing landform a garage and large storage area is tucked under the deck to utilise the restrictive building platform to its potential. Matai timber floors create a warmth throughout the home.


This is a home that reincarnates the typical Kiwi bach with all the modern touches expected of a high-end architectural home. Solar Photovoltaic panels, fully tiled bathroom and ensuite, walk in dressing room, plenty of storage, extensive kitchen to name a few.   All in under 150.0 sq metres.

Space economising

An easy living, easy care 2 bedroom home was the brief to replace the existing, well-loved bach. Slightly elevated this home enjoys views shafts down the eighth fairway of the local golf course. Living areas follow the sun path throughout the day with the day bed set up for those restful afternoons.


An easy care home with aerated concrete panel cladding, colorsteel roof and aluminium joinery but accents of cedar and exposed timber beams give this home a feel of warmth and give the home a sense of personality."

Thorne Group Lakes showhome 2015, House and land packages now available at The Lakes, Tauranga

Situated on a south facing site, with a severe building-line restriction, the site started with a few challenges. Despite this, we were able to design a 190sqm home where the entrance effectively divides the home in half with the kitchen, dining, living on one side, and the bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry and garage on the other side. They are connected by a private outdoor area that opens from the entrance, bedrooms and living room.


Other features include a study nook, window seat, closed of lounge and built in dining area. The design is flexible as it allows for multiple zones both inside and out, as well as maximising all day sun on the south facing site. The Monochrome interiors are timeless and restful, different materials are used to create a sophisticated, layering of texture. Wood panels stained a walnut colour feature in the entrance, mixed with matt black bricks (through the interior spine wall), and exposed concrete flooring.

Thorne Group Showhome 2013

Winner of the the best home under 250sqm at the ADNZ awards in the Bay of Plenty / Waikato in 2013 and within the top 4 in New Zealand.The home has multiple 'zones', including a window seat, covered outdoor area and lounge that can be separated from the bedrooms whilst keeping to a floor area of 167sqm.


The open plan living, dining, kitchen areas were defined by different ceiling heights and floor coverings. Integrating differing layers of wood within the interiors and exteriors complements the natural landscape and surroundings. Connecting to the outdoors by taking the painted board and batten from the outside, through to the interior entrance. Further layers of wood were added in the kitchen and plywood wall in the living area.




2014 Thorne Group Showhome

Situated on a South facing site with a severe building line restriction.   The house wraps around an internal courtyard area, as well as integrating a large roof overhang (reflective of some houses in the 1970's).  This allowed privacy, as well as occupants being able to have sun or shade all day long (despite it being a south facing site).   The internal courtyard was a main feature of the living area, creating another outdoor 'room' as well as dividing the living from the bedrooms, bathrooms and garage.  This also gave the illusion of more space.


A vaulted ceiling in the open plan living, dining, kitchen reinforced the illusion of space.A white painted brick wall wrapped around the tall kitchen units, partly obscuring the kitchen from the entrance (instead of creating a focal point), as well as creating more definable space within a smaller footprint.The naturally stained cedar cladding blended with the whitewashed bricks to add to the natural pallet and worked well at The Lakes.


Clean Lines

A contemporary home that spans across the section at Omokoroa, maximising the natural light and views. The indoor, outdoor flow ensures the functionality of the home is maximised. Whilst functionally the house works well, it doesn’t forsake design elements. Once again materials play a part to create features that add interest to this home without blowing the budget.
